Memperkirakan atau estimasi berat badan pasien anak kadang diperlukan saat melakukan tindakan medis, termasuk saat memberikan resep obat. Idealnya, berat badan anak diukur terlebih dahulu sebelum pemeriksaan medis. Namun pada kondisi gawat darurat, pengukuran secara langsung dan pasti tidak dapat selalu dilakukan sehingga dibutuhkan cara untuk memperkirakan berat badan anak.[1,2]
Berbagai tindakan medis berpatokan pada berat badan anak, khususnya usia di bawah 12 tahun, misalnya menentukan dosis obat, kebutuhan resusitasi cairan, energi defibrilasi, dan pengaturan ventilasi. Selain itu, untuk memilih ukuran selang intubasi endotrakeal, nasogastrik, atau kateter uretra. Beberapa perasat digunakan untuk bisa memperkirakan berat badan anak, di antaranya estimasi orang tua, formula advanced paediatric life support (APLS) berdasarkan usia anak, formula Luscombe-Owens, formula Best Guess, metode Mercy, dan Broselow tape.[1,2]
