Olahraga yang baik diduga memiliki hubungan dengan peningkatan fungsi kognitif lansia. Seperti kita ketahui, proses penuaan menyebabkan terjadinya perubahan fisik dan psikologis. Hal ini dipengaruhi oleh berbagai faktor seperti gaya hidup, faktor lingkungan, dan faktor genetik. Pada lansia, kemampuan fisik dan aktivitas akan menurun seiring dengan perubahan biologis yang dialami. Selain itu, proses penuaan dapat menyebabkan gangguan fungsi kognitif berupa demensia dan yang berkaitan dengan penyakit Alzheimer.[1,2]
Penuaan menyebabkan perubahan biologis seperti penurunan kekuatan motorik, keseimbangan, fleksibilitas, dan fungsi kognitif. Selain itu, lansia memiliki masalah-masalah komorbiditas yang diakibatkan oleh karena penurunan fungsi organ tubuh. Masalah ini patut diwaspadai dan diperlukan usaha untuk mencegah terjadinya gangguan pada berbagai organ tersebut.[1,2]
Penelitian saat ini menemukan bahwa olahraga memiliki banyak keuntungan bagi lansia. Olahraga tidak hanya memperbaiki fungsi metabolisme tubuh dan kekuatan fisik, namun juga mampu meningkatkan fungsi kognitif pada lansia. [1,2]
