Peranan pelembab pada tatalaksana dermatitis atopik adalah untuk menjaga lapisan pelindung alami (barrier) kulit agar tidak mudah ditembus oleh berbagai paparan dari luar, yang dapat mencetuskan reaksi peradangan. Dermatitis atopik adalah kelainan kulit yang bersifat kronis dan kambuhan dalam jangka waktu panjang. Karena itu, menjaga integritas barrier kulit tetap utuh sepanjang waktu adalah hal yang sangat penting.[1,2]
Sebagai upaya tersebut maka digunakan pelembab kulit dengan efek anti inflamasi dan antipruritus. Pemilihan formulasi pelembab yang tepat dan sesuai indikasi sangat penting agar tidak menyebabkan efek buruk, tetapi mencapai efek terapi yang optimal. Bahan-bahan alami seperti Na hyaluronat, vitis vinifera, butyrospermum parkii butter, telmesteine, dan glycyrrhetinic acid telah digunakan sebagai bahan pelembab yang dapat menjaga kulit agar tidak kering dan tidak mudah mengalami reaksi inflamasi.[1-4,7-9]
