Meskipun memiliki nilai nutrisi dan sifat hipoalergenitas yang mirip untuk pasien alergi susu sapi, formula terhidrolisa ekstensif yang mengandung protein whey memiliki perbedaan dengan formula terhidrolisa ekstensif yang mengandung protein casein. Formula terhidrolisa ekstensif yang mengandung whey dilaporkan lebih unggul dalam hal rasa, waktu pengosongan lambung, dan perbaikan berat badan untuk pasien.[1-3]
Sementara itu, formula terhidrolisa parsial tidak dapat digunakan untuk penanganan alergi susu sapi karena tidak memenuhi kriteria hipoalergenik. Kriteria hipoalergenik adalah susu formula yang terbukti tidak menimbulkan reaksi alergi pada 90% bayi atau anak dengan alergi susu sapi seperti susu formula terhidrolisa ekstensif.[1-3]
Alergi susu sapi merupakan alergi makanan yang paling sering terjadi pada anak-anak, dengan insiden 2–7,5%. Alergi susu sapi dikaitkan dengan gangguan asupan nutrisi pada anak, yang berisiko menyebabkan gangguan tumbuh kembang anak. Oleh sebab itu, berbagai proses pengolahan susu sapi seperti proses hidrolisa dilakukan untuk menghasilkan produk yang aman bagi anak dengan alergi susu sapi.[1-5]
